Administrator answers:

Hi, Jasmine,

It’s the government agencies and programs who decide if you are low income or not. Start applying for programs, visit Social Services, and ask around. You may qualify for money you didn’t know about.

They only way to find out is to apply.

Good luck!

Lisa asks…

Are there any open housing programs in Connecticut for Single Mothers?

My friend is trying to find a program that is open and accepting people/applications.
She’s a single mother of two girls. Has 1 bad landlord reference & recently had to leave her current apartment due to pipe bursting and losing all her belongings. She’s currently living with her grandparents, but they are to old and can’t handle 2 little kids living with them. So she has to be out by January. She has a low income and no help with her kids. The oldest is in school and she pays a tuition for her school….she collects food stamps, and that is all i believe.
So are there any housing programs that she can get into???
Please help and no mean answers. This is for my friend!!
Her daughter is in Preschool there’s no public school, and they go by income. $148 a month.. and she has medical problems.. she has bi-polar disorder. :)
She’s going to go to the Housing Department and seek out a laywer to help her get disability. She’s on meds and sees a doctor every month.

Administrator answers:

Yes, there are homeless shelters.

It is illegal to discriinimate based on gender or martial status, she gets what we all get.

She needs to put the kids in public school, that would solve many problems.

Helen asks…

Does the Section 8 Womens (and ppl) get free apartments?

I know there’s welfare and the gov will help single mothers and ppl w/ low income. But is it true they pay for the ppls places too?? I’ve seen a lot of single mothers and low income families living in nice areas!! I don’t mean to sound harsh but I know they can’t afford it…my friend told me about Section 8 and said they pay for the ppls places

Administrator answers:

Section 8 helps pay for places for low income people to live. They have to pay something but it is based on their income. There are alot of rules and regulations for houses to pass for section 8 subsidies. The house must have carpeting, enough bedrooms, enough cabinets, the proper curtains and windows, etc. So yes, most section 8 housing looks good.

Administrator answers:

Yes, you would qualify for low income housing since you work full time. They will include your child support as income too, not just your pay.

How you fall on the charters depends on your location, it is determined by median income in your city.

Contact the housing authority about what you qualify for, what the wait it Testra Since it sounds like you are at least second generation welfare your mother should know all of ends and outs of you leeching off the rest of the population.
