Sandy asks…

Can a landlord break the lease over a barking dog?

My friend has been in her pet friendly apt in Minneapolis for only 2 months. The landlord “suggested” she find somewhere else for her dog to stay during the day while she is at work. He said the dog barks too often. When my friend replied that there was no where to leave the dog, and that it gave her a sense of security to have her dog there while she was gone, the landlord threatened to break the lease if she didn’t. Hers is not the only dog in the building, and most of them bark when you walk by in the hall. Has anyone dealt with this sort of issue before? Any advice?

Administrator answers:

I had a tenant once who’s dog was very well behaved…until the tenant left the apartment. Once the tenant left…the dog barked, none stop for close to 8 hours straight.

Bottom line is..if your friends dogs is causing a nuisance or disturbing other residence, then the landlord is well within his rights to terminate the lease.

Betty asks…

How do you get rid of common spiders?

Last Feb, and Mar. and this year too, I have been bitten during the night by spiders. I have about 30 bites on my hands and arms, some on my face. But my boyfriend isnt bit at all. We rent a apt, in Minneapolis, mn. There arent any cobwebs in our apt. The bites stay a long time, even if i dont i scratch them. Is there any think i can put on them to help them to heal.
Im on a blood thinner.

thanks, jazzmine54868
We dont own, we rent. I have gotten rid of all the cobwebs in our apartment. I have been to the dr. about and treated it as a allergy. Even though i told the dr. it was from spiders.
i havent changed anything.

Administrator answers:

Are you sure this is being caused by spiders? Spiders usually don’t bite people. And if they do multiple bites are even more rare. Spiders generally avoid people. They just want to eat all those insects like mosquito’s and flys that are a pest. So they are really a blessing in disguise. I personally hate them I think I have arachnophobia ( the fear of spiders) but I remind myself of their benefit to help deal with them. BTW, I fear them the way people fear snakes.
I move into the country last year and I was getting bites all the time. I thought maybe this apartment had bed bugs because I was reading about them on the Internet and was almost sure it was bed bugs. As it winds up bed bug problems are increasing in occurrence in the USA because of all the illegal aliens are transporting them in rental trucks like U-haul and Ryder. And they stay in the trucks for the next unsuspecting renter.
As it wound up it was a serious tick problem in this area and not bed bugs. Its not the season for spiders right now especially in Minnesota! Are you sure that you are not having a slightly allergic reaction to the blood thinner? My mom was a dialysis patient and I remember she would sometimes get itchy rashes from the blood thinners she was on.?

Lizzie asks…

welfare star if you like this?

A guy walks into the local welfare office, marches up to the counter and
says. “Hi.. I’m here to pick up my monthly check.” He adds: ” You know, I
just HATE drawing welfare checks. I’d really rather have a job.”

The social worker behind the counter says, “Your timing is excellent.” We
just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a chauffeur
and bodyguard for his beautiful nymphomaniac daughter. You’ll have to drive
around in his Mercedes, but he’ll supply all of your clothes. Because of
the long hours, meals will be provided. You’ll be expected to escort her
on her overseas holiday trips. You will have to satisfy her sexual urges.
You’ll be provided a two bedroom apartment above the garage. The starting
salary is $90,000 a year.

The guy wide-eyed, says “You’re Bullsh**tting me!”

The Social Worker says, “Yeah, well…….You started it.”

Lesson to be learned from typing the wrong email address:

A Minneapolis couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They planned to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel plans. So, the husband left Minneapolis and flew to Florida on Thursday, with his wife flying down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address, and without realizing his error, sent the email.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband’s funeral. He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack. The widow decided to check her email expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted. The widow’s son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My loving wife

Subject: I’ve arrived Date: April 6, 2006

I know you’re surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I’ve just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then. Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was.

P.S. Sure is hot down here!!!!!

Ruth asks…

Consider buying a home, VA loan, should I bother or keep renting?

I’m a combat veteran who is sick of apartment renting and would like to find a home. I know that I have access to a VA home loan because of my deployment to Iraq but I have no idea were to start. Who do I contact, what type of interest rate will I be looking at, what banks can I use. I have tried looking up online but I’m getting a lot of conflicting answers.

Anyone else successfully used there VA loan recently, I know that loans are getting harder to get right now, is it even worth it. I have good credit but I’m a single, will that affect me? I make about 28,000 a year and have 5,000 that I can put down. I would be looking at homes/condos in the Madison WI area for around 125,000 or less. I have three more months before my current lease is up and I need to decided what to do. Is it even worth my time or should I hold off another year or more.
I should add that I’m mostly looking at apartment conversions and condos. Anyone have a good site that would show me the average property tax in a certain area. I have had trouble finding a good one that doesn’t require the parels (sp) number.

Administrator answers:

Rani now is a good time to get started. You need help with finding a place and getting qualified for a loan. You can talk with lenders on your own about VA financing. Or you can talk with any lender a Realtor might recommend. Your call. But get qualified first before you start looking. Now is a good time, prices are still low. I’m not sure about your market there, but Minneapolis is seeing some stabilization in the decline now. So I would imagine next Spring will see some increases again. Best of Luck! And thanks for going to Iraq!

Carol asks…

Back on Sunday Jan 20, 1985, Nashville’s HIGH temperature was -7 BELOW zero. How did this happen?

I was wondering what made the January 1985 cold outbreak so bad. The weather before it was not extremely brutal, it was cold, but not arctic cold. Usually these historic shots of air come in bunches, with the last being the coldest.
Anyway, the day was January 20, 1985. It was the day Reagan was inaugerated, for the second time.
Temperatures at midnight were the highs for the day, but the thing is, under perfectly clear skies, at 3 in the afternoon (warmest time of day), tempratures were unbelieveable. Nashville stool at 7 below zero, it was still 11 below at Cincinnati, -8 at Pittsburgh, -23 at Minneapolis, -18 in Chicago. All these temperatures, if they were the actual highs ( and not the meidnight highs ) would be AT LEAST 5 degrees colder than ANY other daytime temperature. I was wondering, what caused this?
Yes, the high was 7 degrees above zero, but that was at midnight. I was speaking of at the warmest time of the day, at 3 p.m., and the warmest was -7 below zero.

Administrator answers:

I remember the event well. I worked in Atlanta that Saturday night and when I got off at midnight it was already -2 F at that time and the low that Sunday morning on the 20th in Atlanta was -8 which was one of the few times that century that below zero temperatures were recorded there. The event was triggered as a large polar high moved quickly down from near the arctic circle in northern Canada. While temperature were cool leading up to the polar outbreak, the very cold polar air had pooled for several weeks by a blocking pattern. When it rushed southward that weekend, it was pushed by a 1074 mb high pressure system that pushed the cold air all the way through Florida and most of the Gulf of Mexico. I remember that many apartment houses and a few homes were burned in Atlanta when people used propane torches trying to thaw out frozen pipes and set the buildings on fire. I had just moved to the Atlanta area and had mentioned to the Realtor lady that sold me my house that it didn’t really get cold in Atlanta. I was originally from Minnesota and -8 really doesn’t seem too cold to me due to where I grew up. I still consider -20 as my thresh hold for extremely cold weather and couldn’t understand the fuss that my neighbors had from that cold event.
