Your Questions About Apt For Rent In Manhattan

Thomas asks…

3 bedroom apartment for cheap rent?

So my bro is almost going to collage but the rent my parents pay is WAY to much.
We live in Manhattan, the upper east side.
We need a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom apt. There does not have to be a doorman or a pool but we would not like to pay over 2500.
The location can be anywhere on the upper west side, or the upper west side.
All avenues :)
Thanks guys!

Appropriate Christmas tip for doormen in Manhattan rental building?

Your Question
Appropriate Christmas tip for doormen in Manhattan rental building?
I was wondering how much is customary to tip the building staff at Christmas. I live in a full service, hi-rise building with the staff of 15 (doormen/concierge, porters, maintenance guys). My rent is $1,500 (it’s a corporate apt, my employer pays 50% of the rent). Location: West 40ies. The buidling: 45 floors/12 apts per floor
Although it’s listed as a LUXURY hi-rise the building is very mixed: there are wealthy CEOs and recent college grads sharing small 1 or 2brs.
It will be my first Chrismas here ( i moved in Feb’08). The staff is very friendly (except for 1 guy, each building has that 1 guy who is not a team player) I introduced myself when moving in and since then they all greet me by my name (of course except that 1 guy). I’m a very low maintenance tenant, they do accept my packages and dry cleaning every other week or so. Other than that I don’t require much from them.
I was thinking $30-$40 each. Less to that 1 guy and more to the 3 doormen I like best. I assume if they collect small amounts from over 400 apartments they’ll end up with a very decent Chrismas bonus.
I know it’s prime Manhattan so standards are high here. I don’t want to be cheap but can’t act like Oprah either. What do u guys think?

Any feedback is appreciated.

Administrator answers:

I don’t know if you should play favorites. I would tip $35-40 to all 4 doormen.

Administrator answers:

I used to be a doorman and a porter before on the upper east side, average tenant gave most of us about $20/40 each. Now some of us received more because there was years of trust and friendliness and the extra work we would do because of them.

That one asshole *lol* you should do what a tenant did to one of my former co workers, this older dude gave him a cheap bottle of bum wine *lmao* Cisco name brand. That drink is horrible, anyway the co worker got the hint*lol*

Now if you do this, remember you’re going to get the evil eye from that prick every time he sees you *lol*

Administrator answers:

You are so kind – well done on your festive spirit. The amount sounds very generous to me and will be appreciated, but don’t give different amounts. That just seems a little off to me, maybe a bottle of scotch or something like that instead.
