Your Questions About East St Louis Mo

August 11, 2013

Chris asks…

i’m talking where in the USA does the west begin? i keep reading that michigan, ohio, indiana are midwest?

i’ve read that the west begins at the arch in st louis, mo., nebraska city, ne., and ft worth, tex.
if the west begins in nebraska city, ne. st.louis, mo. or ft worth tx., then how is it that the aforementioned states are east of these points? for them to be in the middle of the west, the west would need to begin on the outskirts of philidelphia, pa.

Administrator answers:

The midwest is “west” in the sense of being west of the eastern states that were settled first. When Daniel Boone and others explored the unsettled Ohio territory…it was considered the “west” since it was west of the populated parts of the U.S. At that time. As settlers went further and further west, those states that had been called the west, started being called the midwest to differentiate them from states even further west. The U.S. Grew and developed from the east coast to the west coast. See sites below.

Sandra asks…

when will the car show be in springfield mo ?

I thought it would be the first part of May
thank you

Robert asks…

What region of St. Louis is Six Flags in? I’m looking for a hotel nearby the park and this info would help!?

Administrator answers:

Six Flags St. Louis is actually in Eureka, MO. Zip code is 63025. That should help in trying to find a hotel.

I know there is a Holiday Inn right next to the park entrance and a Comfort Inn not too far away. There are a few hotels in the Fenton/Valley Park area east of 6-Flags and I believe there are a couple of hotels in Pacific just west of Eureka. My family likes to stay in the Drury Inn in Fenton. It is at the corner of Hwy 44 and Route 141. It’s a nice place…free hot breakfast, happy hour in the lobby with soda and popcorn, indoor/outdoor pool. Links below.

Mark asks…

Does anyone know anything about a tragic head on collison in Warrensburg MO??

All I know is it happened the same year as the St Louis World Fair…..I saw something about it in a book…

Administrator answers:

Warrensburg, Missouri Train Wreck
October 10, 1904

TRAINS IN COLLISION

And Over Twenty Killed and Many Injured – Engineer Forgot His Orders.

KANSAS CITY, Oct. 10. — The second section of the Missouri Pacific passenger train Number 3 from Wichita to St. Louis carrying World’s Fair excursionists, and a west bound freight collided just east of Warrensburg, Missouri, eighty miles southeast of Kansas City early today.

The forward coach of the passenger train was telescoped and the remainder of both trains damaged. Twenty persons were killed outright and many more injured, some, it is believed, fatally. According to the local Missouri Pacific office, the engineer of the freight train was to blame, having forgotten his orders. He had been ordered to wait at a switch just south of Warrensburg, but he neglected to do so. They met on a sharp curve while running at good speed. The passenger coaches were crowded.

It was some time before the dead and injured could be extricated from the debris as the wreck occurred in a narrow cut during the dark of the early hours of the morning. Relief trains were hurried to the scene and everything possible done for the injured.
A telephone message to the Associated Press stated at the time the dead numbered twenty-three, seventeen of whom had been killed instantly and the injured numbered close to thirty, many are in a dying condition.

Among the dead are:
MRS. W. J. DARST and son GILBERT, aged 12, Dexter, Kansas.
W. H. ALLEN and two sons, Pittsburg, Kansas.
DOROTHY GREER, Pennsboro, Missouri.
L. F. BURES, Bernard, Missouri.
CAL REED, Bernard, Missouri.
GERTRUDE LOUD, Bernard, Missouri.
DICEY REAM, Bernard, Missouri.
ADDIE KANE, Pittsburg, Kansas.
G. A. WEEBER, Fountain, Pennsylvania.
LARENCE ERRING, Kansas.
SIDEL, head brakeman.
PHILIP RAGEL, Edna, Kansas.
MRS. PHILIP RAGEL, Edna, Kansas.
SUSIE COOPER, Edna, Kansas.
MRS. MARY CASMET, Sedan, Kansas.
HARRY CARR, Chautauqua Springs, Kansas.
LEE DOORES, Bronaugh, Missouri.
NELLIE and DOLLY SULLIVAN, Cherryvale, Kansas.
HATTIE KILFEY, Oxford, Kansas.
DORIS GREGG, Bronaugh, Missouri.
M. LINDSAY, Oxford, Kansas.
DR. H. L. McILHENRY, Springman, Kansas.

It is now known that twenty-seven were killed and thirty injured.

Both engineers and both firemen saw the danger and jumped. They were only slightly hurt.

Ken asks…

My husband and I are looking for fishing lakes within 60 miles of St. Louis, MO?

We prefer a place where you can rent a boat or nice areas around the lake where you can fish.

Administrator answers:

In Missouri there is also Creve Coeur. Not sure if boat rentals are now available.

And as mentioned Busch Wildlife. Can rent Jon boats there. Need your own electric trolling motor. But very nice place and close.

Farther away is a nice lake. Mark Twain. I-70W. 19N –follow signs. Excellent fishing. Boat rentals

Illinois there is a small lake at Pontoon Beach. No boat rentals now. And farther east is Caryle Lake.
